Poker Set

Poker Sets, Unmatched Quality

Creating a Custom Poker Set

When you're sitting at a poker table, although you're hoping to have a good time, the goal of the evening should be to win. How exactly do we determine who wins? It's simple. You have to win all the chips at the table.

Even though that probably seems obvious to most poker players, the fact is that when planning a poker night, most hosts focus more on refreshments and making sure that they have a couple of decks of cards at the ready. They forget that a poker set, complete with poker chips, is just as, if not more important to the success of the evening.

A poker set needs to have chips of differing colors in order to represent different monetary values. In addition, you want to make sure that people aren't bringing their own chips to the table in an attempt to cheat the house and underhandedly bump up their bankroll. That's why a custom set of chips that are uniquely identifiable is so appealing for the poker night host to own.

In Atlantic City, for example, each casino has its own standard poker chips with a design particular to that casino. Although the color coding is consistent throughout the resort town, red chips for example are always worth $5 while black chips are always worth $100, a chip from the Borgata looks totally different than one from Bally's. You cannot use one house's chip at any another casino. They have no value outside of that house.

So what do you need to consider if you're looking to add a personal touch to your poker night with a custom poker set? First, you need to consider the material from which your set will be made. The three most common types of poker chip materials are clay, ceramics and plastic.

Clay chips are far and away the most popular kind of chip. These chips have a soft surface that allow for easy stacking. Poker players love to use large stacks as a way of projecting strength at the table, so a chip that makes construction of these towering displays is welcome at any poker table.

When we talk about plastic chips, we're not talking about the children's set you can find at the dollar store, though those certainly are the cheapest variety of chips made in this material. Many professionally made plastic chips are made with a metal core so that have some weight to them. Plastic chips can retain bright, vivid colors and are easily molded into unique shapes and styles to truly individualize your poker set.

Ceramic chips are popular with those interested in custom design of poker chips because they can easily accept detailed artwork that is applied to their face. With ceramic chips, you can actually embed an image onto the chip itself, making an endless number of possibilities in terms of how you wish to make these chips unique.

The more traditional ways in which to personalize your sets are hot stamping and the use of custom labels. With hot stamping, a colored foil is pressed into the poker chip using heat as a way to adhere the foil to the chip.

The process of hot stamping is very economical, though it can only accommodate designs of one color. Most of these stamps use gold foil to add initials or dollar values to chips. However, you may be able to use silver, white or black as the color utilized for the stamping process.

If you're envisioning something a little bit more intricate, such as a multi-colored logo or image, then you're going to need to use a custom label. The price of these labels can run the gamut, but keep in mind that only the more expensive ones will be durable enough to handle dirt and spills at the table. You're probably going to want to spend a little bit more to make sure you have waterproof, cleanable labels so that your special chips can last a long time.

Although custom labels do allow for tons of creativity, you can't fit a square peg into a round hole. If you're going to go this route, you need to make sure you use a chip that has an inlay or recessed area, or else the process simply will not work.

Finally, once you've selected the kind of chip you want and the method of personalization you intend to use to make your set your own, you still need a place to keep your poker chips safe from the elements and a way to carry your set from place to place.

Carrying cases are essentially for the proper storage and transportation of your poker chips. They typically come in aluminum, wood or acrylic and can take the form of briefcases, carousels, or authentic "casino" transport carriers.

If you plan on bringing your poker chips with you to other locations, then a case or carrier is probably the best choice for you. However, if you plan on simply leaving them pretty much in one place, like sitting in the center of the poker table in your basement, then a wood carousel might be ideal for storage as well as display purposes.
